IMovie 06 and iDVD 11 is a "lossless" combination.

If you share your movie from iMovie 09/11, it gets re-rendered at 640x480 or less, and then iDVD upscales it back to 720x480. Your movie will arrive at iDVD in DV format, which is an ideal match for making a DVD: same resolution, same pixels aspect ratio, and original quality. If your primary workflow is editing DV clips and making DVDs, iMovie '06 is better suited. iMovie 06 uses ALL of the image to form the video. IMovie 09/11 uses 'single field processing' meaning every other horizontal line of the video is thrown out, which reduces the sharpness of the footage. I would use iMovie 06 with iDVD 09/11, why? The ADVC300 will take Audio and Video from any source (VCR, Tivo, Satellite Receiver) and convert it to FireWire (iMovie will treat it like a camera). The program that comes with the ADVC300 has some nice filters that can improve video and audio of the source material. These systems connect your VHS player to a computer, and enable you to create a digital file that you can burn to DVD.
It also comes with a nice Macintosh application that works flawlessly with iMovie 06 and iDVD 09/11 (I have used it a few times with iMovie 11). Use an analog-to-digital adapter bundled with software, such as an Elgato Video Capture, or similar products, such as Roxio Easy VHS to DVD for Mac, or Corel Easy VHS to DVD for Windows. With the ADVC300 Audio and Video go in, FireWire comes out. To get your VHS video into iMovie, use the Grassvalley ADVC300 (much better than the roxio easy vhs to dvd).
Christopher's opinion was that Elgato was the better product (but, of course, things may have changed over the past 4 years). The comments below the article are quite interesting. It compares Elgato Video Capture with Roxio's Easy VHS to DVD (you mentioned Roxio in an earlier post here). However, the quality was compromised somewhat by my initial transfer method from the projector to VHS (which was done many years earlier before miniDV was available). A couple of years ago I used pass-through to transfer old 8mm and Super 8 movies from VHS tape to iMovie (over 4 hours of footage). I've never used other capture methods, so can't comment on how well they perform. No, I've only used the camcorder in pass-through mode (easy, and with good quality). Have you used it? I understand that you use your camcorder, but you may have used it in the past.
